Gaming Dad Blog 13: Minecraft – A Multiple Part Series

One of the games that I have been very excited about showing my children is Minecraft. I always thought of it as “video game Legos” and they enjoy playing with Legos. I first started out in Creative Mode because they can fly and build whatever they want. It took some time introducing the controls but they really enjoyed playing. At first, they had trouble jumping over things and orienting themselves with the camera. Two joysticks was a struggle but I was able to teach them how to move around. Once we started getting going, they created houses, paths, zoos, and numerous structures.

Some questions that I asked my kids were, “What is Minecraft about?” They answered with, “build things.”

My follow up question was, “Why do we build things?” Answer: “So we can sleep there.”

My daughter’s favorite part was building a library and house for herself. Hopefully, it’s not a sign that she is ready to live by herself. My son enjoyed putting hundreds of animal eggs. This was unfortunate because it was lagging the game and I had to command /kill thousands of villagers. I actually made my kids look away for that part.

Something they did not like was breaking through the bedrock at the bottom and falling through the world. They also did not enjoy dying and having to respawn.

Note: My cousin with kids the same age found Frozen II Minecraft Adventure Pack. There will be more on that next week.

My daughter’s score: 100 hearts

My son’s score: 20, 40, 60, 80, 22 cars

My score: 5 out of 5.
